Antenatal Class

After many many hours of preparation in the weeks and months before, the day finally arrived. We had already set up the equipments, chairs and tables the day before, and so this was it. About 30 pregnant mothers came. Some were pregnant for the first time and some had already been pregnant before. Still, what's wrong with a little bit more knowledge, ain't it?

We started with registration and the opening ceremony, as usual. Then, after a breakfast, our class started. First, there was a talk on changes during pregnancy - what to expect and some tips; then the process of labour; and also the changes after giving birth. Aspects of diet were also discussed, as they are important for the nutrition of both the growing baby and mother. There were also representatives who gave talks on amnion donor and stem cells.

Some mothers-to-be were jotting down some notes too! Haha.

After the classes and lunch, time for practical session! Our committee taught them the various exercises associated with breathing, pain control and pelvic muscle strengthening.

Just some simple exercises. No problem.

The next day, we started off with classes on newborn care. Yeah, the cute babies are what the pregnancy is all about, isn't it? So, naturally, the mothers would want to know how to take care of these innocent and adorable babies, what they can do and what they should be aware of. In a way, it would help to reduce their anxiety. Then, there was the talk on breastfeeding, on how exclusive breastfeeding will benefit both the babies and mothers, as well as on the methods and a few other aspects of breastfeeding.

Of course, the talks wouldn't be complete without practical sessions. So, we had stations which provide demonstrations as well as the opportunity to try hands-on on the model baby dolls. There were stations on how to bathe a baby, how to clean the umbilical stump and change the diaper, and how to massage a baby. Lastly, there were a demonstration session on breastfeeding.

Well, that's about it. We really do hope that the pregnant mothers would benefit from it.
